Lubbock Texas Temple established to serve West Texas

By BETH PRATT
A-J Religion Editor

In March, 2002, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened its 109th temple, the Lubbock Texas Temple at 71st Street and Frankford Avenue.

The LDS temple serves about 13,500 members in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Temples are not meeting houses, but serve as the center for the ordinances of the church, including surrogate baptism for the dead, eternal marriage and family sealing ceremonies.

The head of the church, President Gordon B. Hinckley, was in Lubbock for the formal dedication April 21. Only members of the church in good standing may enter the temple once it is dedicated.

Texas has 220,000 Mormons in 447 congregations. A temple was added in Dallas in 1984 and Houston in 2000. Another temple is slated for construction in San Antonio.

When Hinckley announced that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would build 50 new temples in two years, he was addressing a church that had taken 170 years to build 50 temples.

Few would have guessed that Lubbock would become a temple site.

Few, that is, but Dr. Jay Jensen, a retired Lubbock cardiologist, who submitted the proposal to Salt Lake City, persuasively citing the geographic distances in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.

Hinckley named Jensen president of the temple.

Temples are designed to stand for the ages, with engineering to surpass the standard for the area by one level, whether for earthquakes, floods or winds.

In Lubbock, the tower topped by the statue of the Angel Maroni was the biggest challenge because it had to sturdy enough to withstand high winds, such as a tornado would bring.

HEAD:American Muslim Council adds voice to South Plains community

Life is not the same for Americans since the Sept. 11 attacks, but for Muslims throughout the country the change is even more drastic.

Although Lubbock has a mosque, Muslims in West Texans have traditionally kept a low profile.

In the wake of the terrorist attacks, it is a luxury they know they can no longer afford.

In response, local Muslims formed the Lubbock Chapter of the American Muslim Council in November.

The council will represent the interests of Muslims to the broader community as well as seek more integration into the community through commonly-shared values.

Mak Akram is council president.

''It's a start for us to introduce ourselves,'' he said at a reception to introduce council officers to the community.

Safei-Eldin Hamed, spokes man for the four-member public relations arm of the Lubbock chapter, noted, ''There are many people who want to speak for Muslims.''

One of the concerns of the council is to see that those voices are knowledgeable and to offer rebuttal when information is incorrect.

''One out of five people in the world is Muslim, and according to estimates, America is home to six or seven million Muslims,'' Hamed said.

In Lubbock, the council is one of four Muslim organizations -- The Islamic Center, the Islamic Student Asso ciation and the Arab Student Association on the Texas Tech campus.

The council is a socio-political action group that speaks to issues of the day.

New on Lubbock's religion scene is a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In March, the temple held a week-long open house. After its dedication, the temple is entered only by Mormons in good standing.

Also, The American Muslim Council--Lubbock Chapter organized in October to speak to the community on socio-political issues that concern Muslims.
